# What to do on an Abu Dhabi layover

Abu Dhabi's sights are spread out, so every plan here is a taxi ride from the airport. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the quickest, about 20 minutes away, and fits a 5-hour layover. With longer layovers, add Heritage Village, the Louvre Abu Dhabi or Ferrari World.

## How much of Abu Dhabi can you see on a layover?

If your passport lets you leave Abu Dhabi airport, a 5-hour layover gives about 1.5 hours in town, enough for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. With 5.5 hours, visit the free Heritage Village; with 6, the Louvre Abu Dhabi; with 7.5, Ferrari World; with 8, the Grand Mosque and the Louvre together. Landing at night? Sleep airside, then be at the mosque when it opens at 9am. On Fridays the mosque is shut from 11:30am to 2:30pm.

## At a glance

- **Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque**: AED 10, 9am to 8:30pm (Fri shut 11:30am to 2:30pm)
- **Louvre Abu Dhabi**: AED 70, 10am to 6:30pm Mon to Thu, 8:30pm Fri to Sun
- **Heritage Village**: Free, 9am to 7pm (Fri 7:30am to noon, 3pm to 9pm)
- **Ferrari World**: From AED 345, 10am to 7pm
- **Qasr Al Hosn**: 9am to 8pm Sat to Thu, from 2pm Fri
- **Layover tours**: 3 to 6 hours, with airport pickup

Every plan below starts and ends at Zayed International Airport (AUH), and takes a metered taxi or ride-hailing car, because Abu Dhabi has no train to the airport. This guide allows about an hour to get out of the airport, a ride each way and being back 90 minutes before departure.

**First make sure you can leave the airport**: [visa and transit rules](https://abudhabilayover.com/visa-and-transit/) say which passports get a visa on arrival and what the others need.

Nobody publishes taxi times from the airport to the Grand Mosque or the Corniche, and the few published figures elsewhere are round ones (Ferrari World says 10 minutes, Visit Abu Dhabi puts the Louvre's Saadiyat Island around 25). So the rides below are map driving estimates with time added to find a car, and the visits are allowances. The weekend here is Saturday and Sunday, with a half day on Fridays, and the Grand Mosque and Heritage Village both close in the middle of Friday.

## 5 to 6 hours: the Grand Mosque and Heritage Village

With 5 to 6 hours you have about 1.5 to 2.5 hours in town: one sight, then back.

### The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The quickest plan, and the one that fits the shortest layover. It suits anyone with 5 hours.

1. Clear immigration and take a taxi from the rank outside arrivals, or a ride-hailing car from the Arrivals Car Park. About **20 minutes** on a map estimate; this guide allows 30.
2. Register at the visitor centre of the **Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque** and pay AED 10 if you're from outside the UAE. Allow about 90 minutes with the walking tour, which the mosque says takes "approximately 30 - 45 minutes".
3. Take a taxi back to the airport, leaving town 2 hours before departure.

**Pick your day.** The mosque is open 9am to 8:30pm (last entry 8pm), and on Fridays 9am to 11:30am and 2:30pm to 8:30pm. In Ramadan its hours change: the first 20 days it opens 9am to 6pm and 9:30pm to 1am.

**What to wear.** Women: clothes loose to the ankles, sleeves to the wrists and hair fully covered. Men: legs covered is preferred. No food or drink, and photos only at the photo stops.

**Bags.** The mosque states no bag-size rule. Security checks every visitor, with separate tracks for women and men.

**With children.** Children are welcome but must stay under constant supervision.

### Heritage Village and the Corniche Breakwater

Free entry, and the furthest of the quick plans: it's about 38 minutes by taxi on a map estimate, so it needs 5.5 hours.

1. Take a taxi to **Heritage Village** on the Corniche Breakwater, near Marina Mall: about 38 minutes by map estimate, 45 allowed.
2. Spend about 90 minutes there and on the breakwater.
3. Take a taxi back, leaving 2.25 hours before departure.

**Opening hours.** Visit Abu Dhabi gives Monday to Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 7pm, and Fridays 7:30am to noon and 3pm to 9pm. Entry is free.

## 6 to 8 hours: the Louvre and Ferrari World

With 6 to 8 hours you have 2.5 to 4.5 hours in town.

### Louvre Abu Dhabi

For the art museum on Saadiyat Island, with 6 hours or more.

1. Take a taxi to the **Louvre Abu Dhabi**: 24 to 30 minutes on a map estimate (Visit Abu Dhabi says Saadiyat Island is around 25 minutes from the airport), 35 allowed.
2. Allow about 2 hours for the galleries.
3. Take a taxi back, leaving 2 hours 5 minutes before departure.

**Opening hours.** Galleries open 10am to 6:30pm Monday to Thursday and 10am to 8:30pm Friday to Sunday, with last entry 30 minutes before. Adults pay AED 70; under 18s are free.

**Bags.** A bag or suitcase larger than 55 × 38 × 20 cm can't enter. Smaller bags and backpacks go in the cloakroom after the ticket scan, because only small handbags are allowed in the galleries.

**Tickets.** Buy at the museum, or ahead on GetYourGuide.

### Ferrari World Abu Dhabi

The plan for families, on Yas Island: it's the closest sight to the airport, about 13 to 15 minutes by taxi on a map estimate (the park itself says 10).

1. Take a taxi to **Ferrari World**, allowing 25 minutes.
2. Allow about 4 hours in the park.
3. Take a taxi back, leaving 1 hour 55 minutes before departure.

**Opening hours and price.** The park's calendar shows 10am to 7pm every day in November 2026. Tickets start from AED 345 (seen November 2026) and parking is free, says the park.

**Tickets.** Buy from the park's own site, or on GetYourGuide.

## 8 to 10 hours: the Grand Mosque and the Louvre

With 8 to 10 hours you have 4.5 to 6.5 hours in town, enough for both icons.

### The Grand Mosque, then the Louvre

Start at the mosque, which opens at 9am, then take a taxi to the Louvre.

1. Take a taxi to the **Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque** (about 20 minutes) and spend about 90 minutes there.
2. Take a taxi to the **Louvre Abu Dhabi**, about 25 minutes by map estimate, and allow about 2 hours.
3. Take a taxi to the airport, 24 to 30 minutes, leaving 2 hours 5 minutes before departure.

**Pick your day.** On Fridays the mosque is shut from 11:30am to 2:30pm, so start there at 9am. The Louvre closes at 6:30pm on weekdays.

**Cost.** Entry is AED 10 plus AED 70, and the three taxi rides come to about AED 203 on the airport tariff before waiting and booking fees (derived), or about US$77 a person for one traveller.

## Tours from the airport

Private layover tours collect you at the airport and bring you back. Resellers sell them; this guide has no operator's own terms for them, so check the return time against your flight. For a tour that starts after immigration, plan on the tour's length plus about 2.5 hours: an hour out and 90 minutes back.

| Tour | Length | Layover you need | Price |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Private layover city tour with pickup and drop-off, GetYourGuide | 6 hours | About 8.5 hours | Live price on GetYourGuide |
| Layover tour with airport pickup and drop-off, Viator | 3 to 6 hours | 5.5 to 8.5 hours | From about US$80 (seen November 2026) |

## Overnight: sleep at the airport, then the Grand Mosque

If you land at night, rest airside, then take a morning in town.

### Sleep at the airport, then the Grand Mosque at opening

The mosque opens at 9am, and a visit of about 90 minutes ends at 10:30am. A taxi back takes about 30 minutes and you should be at the airport 90 minutes before departure, so this plan fits a flight from about 12:30pm.

1. Sleep at the **AU Hotel** or rest in the **Pearl Lounge**, both airside. Both are described under Rest at the airport below.
2. Clear immigration in the morning and take a taxi to the **Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque** for 9am. On Fridays it is shut from 11:30am to 2:30pm, so be there at opening.
3. Take a taxi back, leaving town 2 hours before departure.

**Check the airport's notice.** The airport has an undated notice, still posted on 7 November 2026, that, during overnight baggage-system maintenance (11pm to 5am), passengers should arrive at least 3.5 hours before an international departure.

## 24 hours and longer

Etihad's Abu Dhabi Stopover gives one or two free nights at a three or four-star hotel, on Etihad-operated flights booked with Etihad, with a layover of at least 24 hours. A nominal fee applies, you book at least 72 hours ahead, breakfast and transfers aren't included, and blackout dates include 1 to 8 December 2026 and 27 December 2026 to 4 January 2027. With 24 hours you can combine any two plans above. Beyond that, you need a visa for your whole stay: an Etihad transit visa covers 48 or 96 hours.

## Rest at the airport

If you can't leave, or don't want to, both options are airside, so you need no visa.

### AU Hotel, airside in Pier D

The airport's hotel sits in the departures zone, next to the Pearl Lounge, with 138 rooms and "6/12/24-hour flexible stay packages for layovers". You need "a valid boarding pass for an onward flight from AUH" to check in, and the hotel brochure says transit guests should stay within the transit zone, because re-entry isn't allowed after immigration. The airport publishes no price: Etihad says to book through online travel agents.

### The Pearl Lounge, airside in Pier D

Open to all travellers, 24 hours, at the start of Pier D: 3 hours cost AED 265 (seen November 2026). It has relaxation rooms and paid private shower rooms.

## Tips that make an Abu Dhabi layover easier

- **Dress for the mosque.** Wear loose clothing that covers your arms and legs, and bring a scarf if you're a woman.
- **Heat.** Visit Abu Dhabi gives a summer high of around 42°C and 24°C by day from November to April. Put indoor stops in the middle of the day.
- **Ramadan.** Don't eat, drink or smoke in public in daylight. Shops close by day and reopen after sunset.
- **Check your flight.** Look at your onward flight's status before you go landside, and again before you head back.
