What's the best way from Abu Dhabi airport into the city on a layover?

For most layovers, take a taxi or a ride-hailing car: it reaches the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in about 20 minutes on a map estimate, and the airport tariff is metered from AED 20 plus AED 1.82 a km. Bus A1 is the cheapest, around AED 4 on a Hafilat card, but takes 48 minutes to Al Zahiyah. The last A1 back leaves Al Zahiyah at 10:42pm. Allow about an hour to get out of the airport, and be back 90 minutes before your flight.

Getting through the border

Zayed International Airport (AUH) doesn’t publish immigration queue times, and neither do Etihad or Visit Abu Dhabi. This guide allows about an hour from landing to the taxi or the bus.

  • Visa. Most Western passports get a visa on arrival at the immigration counter. See visa and transit rules for each passport.
  • Smart Gates. The airport describes them as for “a UAE resident or eligible national”, so expect a staffed desk unless you’re registered.
  • Fast Track. The airport sells a Fast Track pass for its security and immigration lanes, including for transit, through its own page. It publishes no price.
  • Bags. If you hold a single ticket, check your bags through to your final destination. Otherwise you collect them at Arrivals.

Taxis, ride-hailing and pre-booked cars: quickest to the sights

Official airport taxis are “available 24/7” and metered, and wait “directly outside the arrivals hall”. You can pay “by cash or card at the drop-off destination”.

  • Airport taxi. Abu Dhabi Mobility’s tariff (seen November 2026): a AED 20 flag fall, AED 1.82 a km, AED 0.50 a minute of waiting and a AED 4 booking fee, or AED 5 from 10pm to 6am. There are no fixed fares. A street taxi starts at AED 5 (AED 5.50 at night) with a AED 12 minimum, which helps on the way back.
  • Ride time. Neither the airport nor Abu Dhabi Mobility publishes taxi times. The few published figures are round ones: Ferrari World says it is “just 10 minutes” from the airport, and Visit Abu Dhabi puts Yas Island 15 minutes away and Saadiyat Island, home of the Louvre, “around 25 minutes”. Nobody publishes one for the Grand Mosque or the Corniche. So this guide’s times are map driving estimates (not published figures): the Grand Mosque about 20 minutes (21.1 km), the Louvre Abu Dhabi 24 to 30 minutes (33.4 km), Ferrari World 13 to 15 minutes (11.4 km), Heritage Village about 38 minutes (41.6 km). Its plans allow 30, 35, 25 and 45 minutes, to cover finding a car.
  • Fare for the Grand Mosque. AED 20 plus AED 1.82 × 21.1 km is about AED 58 each way (derived, before waiting and the booking fee).
  • Ride-hailing. The airport names Careem and Uber, and its page also names the Yango app. Pick-up is in “the designated pick-up zone in the Arrivals Car Park”: follow the Ride Hailing signs.
  • Pre-booked transfers. The airport lists the Etihad limousine and independent operators, and recommends booking ahead. A private transfer costs more than a taxi but fixes the price and helps with a group.

A car beats the bus at almost any hour: it’s quicker, it needs no card, and it runs when the bus doesn’t.

Bus A1: cheapest into the centre

Bus A1 runs from the stops outside the Arrivals area to Al Zahiyah Bus Station in the city centre, via Al Danah. The airport says it serves Al Reem Island and the Tourist Club area. Abu Dhabi Mobility’s timetable (PDF created 18 March 2026) is the same every day of the week.

Monday to Sunday
First bus from Terminal A Arrival6:05am
Last bus from Terminal A Arrival11:05pm
FrequencyEvery 30 minutes
Ride to Al Zahiyah Bus Station48 minutes (6:05am bus arrives 6:53am)
First bus back from Al Zahiyah Bus Station6:12am
Last bus back from Al Zahiyah Bus Station10:42pm, reaching Terminal A Departure at 11:36pm

The airport’s page says the A-series buses “operate 24/7”, but the official A1 timetable has no bus from the terminal after 11:05pm and none from the city after 10:42pm. The N2 night bus runs from the terminal every 15 minutes from 11:20pm to 5:50am. Check the times on Abu Dhabi Mobility’s timetable page or the Darbi app on the day.

  • Fare. AED 2 plus 5 fils a km, up to AED 5 for a journey, which the airport puts at around AED 4. Children aged 10 and under travel free.
  • Hafilat card. AED 10, sold with top-ups at machines near the airport’s bus stops. The balance can’t exceed AED 150. Cash isn’t accepted on the bus.
  • A2 goes to Khalifa Street, Al Markaziyah and Al Khalidiya.

Other ways out of the airport

  • Free shuttle. Visit Abu Dhabi’s Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus is free and lists stops at the airport, the Grand Mosque and Ferrari World. Its route and timetable PDF is dated February 2025, so check Visit Abu Dhabi’s page before you rely on it.
  • Coach to Dubai. The Airport Express runs from the Arrivals Hall to Ibn Battuta Bus Station in Dubai every hour on the hour, taking 1 hour 30 minutes.

Storing bags

The airport’s left-luggage desk is on the Arrivals level and open 24 hours. Prices per item (seen November 2026): up to 3 hours AED 35, up to 12 hours AED 55, up to 24 hours AED 75. It’s landside, so you reach it after immigration. Most sights set their own bag rules: the Louvre refuses bags larger than 55 × 38 × 20 cm.

Timing your return

Be back at the airport 90 minutes before departure. Etihad’s check-in closes 60 minutes before departure in Economy, and 45 in Business and First, so 90 minutes covers a traveller who still has a bag to check. For flights to the United States, Etihad asks you to arrive at least four hours before. The airport’s undated notice asks for 3.5 hours before an international departure during overnight baggage-system maintenance from 11pm to 5am.

How much time you’ll have in town depends on your layover. This table allows about an hour from landing to the taxi, 30 minutes each way by taxi to the Grand Mosque and 90 minutes at the airport before departure.
